Hall Stage has not always been in Kent. Over twelve decades the company worked out of Lambeth, Downham Market in Norfolk, Luton, and Borehamwood — the last of these on the doorstep of Elstree.
From the Royal Opera House to television studios and the Empire Pool at Wembley, these are installations and mechanisms built across the first century of the company.
Hall Stage catalogues documented both the engineering and the design language of their era.
Our Heritage Timeline
Established in 1898, Hall Stage is believed to have supplied equipment to every theatre in the UK, and to thousands of stages, TV and film studios throughout the world.
The Company Is Founded
George Hall establishes his workshop in Birmingham, building his first curtain hoists and pulley systems for the theatre trade.
The Nona Works Era Begins
Hall Stage settles into the former Anaconda Works in Lambeth — affectionately renamed “Nona Works” as the original signage faded over time.
The Proscenium Years
Growing demand from touring productions leads to Hall Stage’s early proscenium arch masking and roller safety curtain systems.
Royal Festival Hall
Hall Stage rigging and stage hardware is installed in the newly built Royal Festival Hall, a centrepiece of the Festival of Britain.
Wembley & the Regions
Engineering work at the Empire Pool, Wembley, and a growing order book prompts a second production site in Downham Market, Norfolk.
Into the Nightclubs
Hall Stage hardware finds its way into London’s entertainment scene, including the control systems for the Talk of the Town.
Onto the Studio Backlot
Hall Stage shares a site within the Gate Studios in Borehamwood and expands into international markets.
Anglia Track Becomes T60
The flagship curtain track is refined and relaunched as the T60, still a cornerstone of the range today.
